Inspired by Elsie Wright’s controversial Cottingley Fairies photograph (Wright, 1917), I composed my own fictional image. With my image, I wanted to point out that the digital age makes anything possible, allowing us to travel to completely different, magical, and imaginary worlds. Although this sounds positive at first, there is significant controversy around the pace of technological progress, which makes us question what is real and what is imaginary, especially with the advancements in AI. To end up with the final outcome of my image, I used photoshop to crop and adjust the butterflies the way I wanted them to interact with the elements in my photograph. After, I worked on Procreate to draw the illuminating lights. They play a fundamental role as they allow all the elements to blend naturally. I intentionally included just three butterflies, as this number is frequently associated with balance and visual stability. Moreover, the butterflies were positioned in a way to seem like they escaped from the phone’s screen. Lastly, when I was preparing to take the shot, I increased the brightness of my screen and turned off all other lights. As a result, my face is illuminated only by the screen, creating a more visually pleasing effect.
